The painting depicts the quietness and stillness of hot summer afternoons in old towns of India. Pigeons resting in the holes of old stone walls in the afternoons is a common site in India. The summer afternoons are generally quiet as people rest in the shade to beat the heat. It sets in a very meloncholic mood, where you can only hear occasional cooing of pigeons, breaking the stillness. 
 
I painted this in realistic style. The rough texture of stone and mortar in contrast to the soft body of the pigeons was very interesting to work on. The challenge was to build the textures in watercolours by working in many layers. The neutral earthly shades where chosen to retain the mood of the painting and give it a monochromatic look.
